Everybody Googles (nearly)

In Jan 2011 about 90% of UK Searches were on Google

That is is made up of nearly 86% on google.co.uk and more than 4% on google.com. The nearest competitor had less than 4%.

Since Google provides 90% of searches in the UK is there any point in devoting resources to other search engines?

Google is so popular because its search results are the most relevant. Google devised a ranking scheme for web pages which was better than the competition and it continues to develop sophisticated methods and the competion is fading into obscurity.

There are hundreds of search websites which look like they are unique search engines when they are actually front-ends to a small number of other real search engines and most lead back to Google.

Some promoters say they will submit your website to hundreds of search engines. You can tell them they needn't bother, and you can ask them why they are fibbing!

Lots of small companies don't have a website but give several hundreds of pounds per year to a selection of business directories. Who looks at them? If one years subscription was spent on a simple but optimised website their business would improve markedly.
