Still using web business directories?

Do you still depend upon internet directories to gain exposure on the web?

The trouble with directories is:

  • Most people search on Google and if they can't find what they want, they give up. A few people know about business directories and a few go there if Google doesn't come up with the goods.
  • There are too many web directories in excess of 240 in the UK so which will you pay for and which one will your prospective customer choose, if any?
  • Subscription costs are recurring - every year. It is often cheaper to create a simple optimised website or tune up your existing website and you can say goodbye to that recurring cost.
  • Directories place your entry right up alongside your competitors. Optimise your website and stand out from your competitors. You don't have a website? A functional optimised website can be cheaper than subscribing to directories and produce a lot more business for you.
  • Navigating through the structure of a directory is guess-work which leads down frustrating blind alleys. Their choice of keywords suits them, not you. The structure of their categories cannot possibly cope with the huge variety of things that people seek and the products and services you provide. The user has to make mental leaps to guess where to look. Your potential customer shouldn't need to be that tenacious.
  • Web directories usually have a search box but this is primitive and never competes with the versatility of a search engine optimised website.
Typical web directory search results
  • Google is a search engine and is phenomenally successful because it is useful to people. Yahoo was for many years only a directory and is on the brink on extinction. Still not convinced? Just remember: Search Good - Directory Bad. The basic concept of the directory does not fit the model of the web and the way we behave. There is no substitute for putting the user's search terms on your web pages and letting them find you with a search engine.
  • With Search Engine Optimisation Belfast you can choose as many search terms or keywords as you like but with directories you are limited by their chosen structure which is logical to them but not to everybody else. The so-called SEO options directories sometimes provide and charge extra for, is not a patch on a real search engine's results.
  • Most directories are cluttered with irrelevant banner ads for products not related to the user's goal. Search for Double Glazing and you'll see Ads for cars and alloy wheels.
